Terms of use

These terms apply when you use Clearshelf (clearshelf.com), run by SAACOT LLC (“we”, “us”). By using the site you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site. Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal information.

What Clearshelf is

Clearshelf scores food on what’s in it and where it comes from, and links you to the farms, brands and stores that sell it. We don’t sell, ship or handle any food ourselves. Clearshelf is intended for people in the United States.

Who can use it

You must be 16 or older to create a shopper account, and 18 or older to subscribe to Clearshelf Plus or to use a brand account (and authorised to act for the business).

How scores are made

Every product is scored by one published method (see How we score). AI models draft each score from the product’s ingredients, nutrition, sourcing and other information available to us, following a written guide, and a fixed formula turns that into the number. People don’t review every product. Weekly automated checks flag products for a person to review, products that brands submit or change are reviewed before they go live, and brands and shoppers can send us evidence or report a problem if they think a score is wrong. Nutrition for some plain foods comes from USDA FoodData Central. Products may have been scored at different times, so a score may not reflect the latest version of our method.

Scores, the assistant and articles are information, not advice

Scores, notes, diet and allergy labels, recipes, Shopper Assistant answers and meal plans, and Research hub articles are information and our opinion, based on what’s available to us. They can be incomplete, wrong or out of date, and products change. Diet and allergy labels come from fixed rules applied to the product information we have; they aren’t a guarantee that a product is safe for you. The Shopper Assistant is an AI: it can make mistakes, it may decline some requests (for example very low-calorie plans), and it isn’t a dietitian or a doctor. Always read the product’s label, especially if you have an allergy, and talk to a doctor or registered dietitian about your health or diet. Clearshelf doesn’t give medical, nutritional, dietary or legal advice, and no health professional is available through the service.

Recipes and their photos are created with the help of AI from products in our catalogue. Check every ingredient yourself before cooking, especially for allergies. Research hub articles summarise public information such as lawsuits, recalls and studies, with links to the sources; check the sources for the full picture.

Prices and buying

Prices, stock, shipping and product details come from the sellers and can change. When you buy food, you buy from the seller on their own site: your order, payment, delivery, returns and any problems are between you and them, under their terms. The links we send you through tell the seller you came from Clearshelf. We aren’t paid when you buy; if that changes, we’ll update these terms and the privacy policy first.

Your account

You sign in with your email and a password, or with a one-time link we email you. Keep your password and email account secure, and tell us if you think someone else has used your account. You need an account to check out and to use the Shopper Assistant. You can stop using Clearshelf at any time, and delete your account yourself from your Account page (or brand dashboard), or by emailing hello@clearshelf.com. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms.

The Shopper Assistant and Clearshelf Plus

  • Free use. Signed-in shoppers get 5 assistant questions a month free. Clearshelf Plus has no monthly limit, subject to fair use (below).
  • Price. Plus costs $200 a year (shown as $16.67 a month, billed as $200 a year), in US dollars, plus any tax that applies. The price is shown before you pay.
  • Free trial. Plus starts with a 7-day free trial, one per person. We ask for a card through Stripe Checkout when you start it (unless the trial is offered without a card). If you don’t cancel before the trial ends, your card is charged $200 for the first year when the trial ends.
  • Automatic renewal. Plus renews automatically every year, and your card is charged the then-current yearly price at the start of each year, until you cancel. If the price changes, we’ll email you at least 30 days before the renewal it applies to.
  • Cancelling. Cancel at any time with “Manage billing” on your Account page, which opens Stripe’s billing portal, or by emailing hello@clearshelf.com. If you cancel during the trial you aren’t charged. If you cancel later, Plus stays on until the end of the year you’ve paid for, and isn’t renewed. Deleting your account cancels Plus straight away.
  • Refunds. Payments aren’t refundable for partly used periods, except where the law requires. If you were charged for a renewal you didn’t mean to keep, email us within 14 days of the charge and we’ll refund it in full if you haven’t used Plus since.
  • Failed payments. If a payment fails, Stripe may retry it. Plus may pause until the payment goes through.
  • Payments are processed by Stripe under its own terms. We never see or store your card details.
  • Changes to Plus. We may change what Plus includes. If we remove something important, you can cancel and ask for a refund of the unused part of the year.

For farms and brands

  • Claiming. Only claim a brand or list products you’re authorised to represent. We confirm claims with an email address on the brand’s own website domain or by reviewing the details you give us, and we may refuse, suspend or remove a claim.
  • “Verified brand”. This badge means only that we confirmed the person who claimed the brand represents it. It doesn’t mean we verified the products, their claims or certifications.
  • Your content. What you submit must be accurate and lawful and must not infringe anyone’s rights. You keep ownership of it, and you give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to host, show, copy, adapt, score and publish it on Clearshelf and when promoting Clearshelf, for as long as it’s listed and for a reasonable time afterwards in backups and archives.
  • Listings we create. We may list products from public sources (for example the Shopify catalogue, sellers’ public product pages, Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central) before a brand claims them. If you’re the brand and something is wrong, or you want a listing removed, email hello@clearshelf.com and we’ll correct or remove it.
  • Our decisions. We apply one published method to every product. We decide scores, rankings and what appears on the site; we may correct, hide or remove a listing. If you think a score is wrong, send us evidence and we’ll look at it.
  • Promotions. Promoted placements are labelled “Promoted”. Promotion never changes a score. Only products scoring 80 or more can be promoted. You can pause, stop or change a promotion at any time from your dashboard. Billing for promotions isn’t switched on, so nothing is charged, and any “spend” shown is only an estimate. We’ll tell you the price and terms and ask you to agree before any charge.

Reporting a problem with a product

You can report a problem with any product page. Reports help us check listings; we decide what to change, and we can’t reply to every report. Don’t include personal information about yourself or anyone else in a report. If a product may be unsafe for you, rely on its label and contact the seller.

Fair use

Don’t misuse the site. No automated scraping or bulk copying of Clearshelf’s scores or content, no automated or excessive use of the Shopper Assistant, no attempts to break in or disrupt it, no fake clicks, accounts, reports, reviews or listings, no getting around rate limits or the free question allowance, and nothing unlawful. We may suspend accounts that do.

Our content and others’ content

The Clearshelf name, scores, design, text, articles and recipes belong to us or our licensors. You may share links and quote a score with credit to Clearshelf. Some product information comes from third parties and is used under their terms. Nutrition and ingredient information from Open Food Facts is available under the Open Database License (ODbL). USDA FoodData Central data is in the public domain. Near me uses data from the USDA, OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL) and GeoNames (CC BY 4.0).

Third-party sites

Clearshelf links to stores and other sites we don’t control. We aren’t responsible for their content, products, terms or privacy practices.

No warranties

We work hard to keep Clearshelf accurate and running, but the site and everything on it, including scores, labels, assistant answers and recipes, is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, or for products you buy from sellers, and our total liability for any claim about Clearshelf is limited to the greater of $100 and what you paid us for Plus in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that can’t be waived.

Changes

We may update these terms. We’ll change the date at the top and, for significant changes, tell signed-in users on the site or by email. Using the site after a change means you accept the new terms. Changes to Plus pricing follow the notice described above.

Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of Nevada, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you have a dispute with us, please email hello@clearshelf.com first so we can try to resolve it informally within 30 days. If we can’t, the dispute will be decided by the state or federal courts in Carson City, Nevada, unless the consumer law where you live gives you the right to bring it in your local courts.
